  9.  AB    Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome that may present a difficult
  10.        diagnostic dilemma. Catatonic disorder due to general medical conditions
  11.        must be considered in every patient with catatonic signs. Four patients
  12.        with this disorder are presented. In these patients, general medical
  13.        conditions associated with catatonic disorder included dystonia, HIV
  14.        encephalopathy, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy,
  15.        encephalitis, and renal failure. Three of these patients had
  16.        multifactorial presentations of medical conditions or prior psychiatric
  17.        disorders. A critical literature review concerning catatonia and
  18.        associated nonpsychiatric medical conditions only infrequently supported
  19.        causal relationships between organic factors and the development of
  20.        catatonia. The majority of patients have multifactorial etiologies.
